Terra Incognita was founded in 2021 as a response to algorithmically-driven tourism and superficial bucket-list culture.

We believe that travel is an intellectual and aesthetic practice rather than an industry of leisure. Our contributors are essayists, cartographers, and documentary photographers who spend weeks in single locales, avoiding sponsored press trips and pre-packaged itineraries.

Our Publishing Ethics

• Self-Funded Expeditions: Zero commercial brand sponsorships or tourism board stipends.
• Geographical Responsibility: No geotagging of fragile wilderness ecosystems or micro-biomes.
• Slow Transit Priority: Preferring trains, ferries, and walking over regional commuter flights.
• Independent Printing: A permanent offline paper monograph published biannually.
